ENGLEWOOD Park's annual ram sale at Inverleigh on Wednesday saw return buyers compete for rams.
An order from NSW through Elders Ballarat agent Marty Gleeson saw Lot A1 become the top-priced ram at $4200.
The ram was secured by Greg MacNamara, Elders Finley, NSW, for Warwick and Stacey Doolan, Woodville Poll Dorset stud, Finley, who also secured Lot 8.
The rams recorded an eye muscle area of 38.11 and 28.46 and weighed 129 and 121.5 kilograms respectively.
"The two rams were selected for their depth, as well as being very true to the Poll Dorset type," Mr MacNamara said.
"The low birth weights of lots A1 and 8, combined with high weight gain, make them excellent additions to the stud.
"They have had a long association with the Englewood stud, and they were very keen to secure some sires from them."
The second top-priced rams were lots A4 and A8, both secured by SN and MP Rundell, through Kerr & Co, for $3000 each.
Volume buyer present at the sale was John Sawyer, BR&C Agents, Swan Hill.
Mr Sawyer was purchasing on behalf of a return client from NSW, securing 10 rams to a top of $2600, averaging $2270.
"We are return buyers to the sale for four years now, using the rams purchased over the client's first cross -ewes," he said.
"We felt that the rams selected all had good eye muscle areas and were good heavy rams ready to go out to work, which works for us.
"They really are value for money rams, with the quality of rams offered, with the progeny often going straight over the hooks."
Representing another volume buyer on the day was Charles Stewart & Co agent Gerard Bohan, who secured eight rams to a top of $1800, av $1513.
"We have purchased Englewood genetics for a number of years, and we know they perform well for this client," Mr Bohan said.
"The client is primarily focusing on the supermarket trade, turning off lambs at 24-25kg dressed weight, from September through to Christmas straight off the mothers.
"They do the job for them very well."
Englewood Park stud principal Geoff Oliver was pleased with the results of the sale.
"The top three rams were the first progeny offered by a new sire line, and it's good to see that bloodline in demand," Mr Oliver said.
"It was a good, solid sale, with our specially-selected Poll Dorset rams selling exceptionally well.
"The lamb job is so strong and it's good to see the ram job following suit.
"Everyone's looking for a fast, early-maturing lamb, and we feel we are working on meeting that demand, particularly to meet any market specification."
