Sale district steers pass 605c/kg in winter 'tidy-up'

Quality was mixed at the monthly store market where vendor-bred calves sold to firm rates as secondary cattle eased slightly.

Visiting agents from South Gippsland and East Gippsland were active, taking home the better-bred cattle for bullock fatteners, while most of the secondary cattle stayed local to the Sale district.

Alex Scott & Staff Sale director Aaron Ralph the plainer-cattle yarding was typically expected around this time of year given the wet and cold conditions forecast for the coming weeks.

"Well-bred cattle sold well but a few of the secondary Friesians and dairy-cross cattle were harder to move on," Mr Ralph said.

"We're looking for rain in the Sale district but it's also getting cold now so any rain will be too late to make the feed grow."

Elders Bairnsdale livestock manager Morgan Davies said the sale was firm in comparison with other store sales across southern Victoria.

"Heavy steers were making 430-440c/kg and they were mainly going to local bullock fatteners," Mr Davies said.

ME & JA Webb, Newry, eight Murray Grey heifers, 302kg, for $1350 or 447c/kg or another six, 266kg, for $1250 or 469c/kg.

Michael Kelly, Myrtlebank, sold 1 Charolais steer, 620kg, for $2280 or 367c/kg and and three steers, 523kg, for $2100 or 401c/kg.

Margaret Collyer, Kilamny, sold 10 Angus steers, 538kg, for $2280 or 423c/kg and another 10, 504kg, for $2080 or 412c/kg.

Nutrien Greenwood director Ben Greenwood said the cattle sold to strong competition.

D Harper, Sale, sold seven Angus steers, 358kg, for $1740 or 486c/kg.

D Bruce, Stradbroke, sold 11 Charolais steers, 272kg, for $1600 or 588c/kg.

The estate of L Heywood, Dutson, sold 15 Angus steers, 265kg, $1660 or 605c/kg.

G & J Collins, Newry, sold 10 Angus steers, 300kg, for $1660 or 553c/kg.

Account Taraqua sold Speckle Park heifer bobby calves for $460 and bull calves for $395.
