Prices were again strong at the monthly Warrnambool stores sale on Friday, with spring-drop steer calves selling up to 812 cents a kilogram.
Warrnambool Stock Agents Association president Jack Kelly said the feedlot enquiry was very strong, even though the sale did not feature as many heavier cattle.
Mr Kelly said the spring-drop beef steers and heifers sold better than expected.
The Warrnambool sales typically sold cattle above 300kg, he said.
"We probably had steers and heifers from 180 odd kilos to 240kg, which is unusual for us to sell them that early but the prices are that good people are deciding to give the cow a bit of a spell," he said.
"The fat job in the last three weeks has really picked up.
"They've got cattle to sell and they've got to replace them, so they've decided even if they can get something that's only 210 or 220kg, they've got something in their paddock they can grow out.
"Normally you wouldn't be able to buy the little ones because normally they're not for sale."
