*35 of 38 bulls sold to $15,000 (twice), av $6800
Tasmanian beef stud Guilford Poll Herefords achieved a near-perfect clearance last week, selling 35 of its 38 bulls to a top price of $15,000, twice.
It was the Ouse stud's 47th annual bull sale where return and new clients from across Victoria and Tasmania supported the on-property auction.
Guilford Poll Herefords stud principal Philip Davie, whose father Bert originally started the operation, said the average jumped $300 following a promising 12 months.
"We do try and offer about 40 bulls each year and this year we sold one more than 2020 so we were very pleased by the overall result," Mr Davie said.
"We're after cattle with very good growth and weight for age but still with the ability to fatten for the domestic and export markets."
One of the top-priced bulls Lot 6, Guilford Quaver Q63, was purchased by St Peter's Pass, Oatlands, Tas.
The $15,000 bull was sired by Guilford Anzac M30.
Fergus Morrison, who owns St Peter's Pass - a Merino and Hereford commercial operation, said he liked the temperament and doing ability of the Guilford bulls.
"He's a good all-round bull with a dark coat, a nice straight back and he ticked all our boxes," Mr Morrison said.
"We've bought from Guilford for the last five or six years and we will use this bull over our older cows.
"The last few days has been close to snowing so we need a bull that does well in those cooler times."
The other top-priced bull Lot 13, Guilford Quatrain Q118, was purchased by AJ & JK Woolley, Glen Huon Tas.
Quatrain was sired by Guilford Landscape L138.
The second top-priced bull Lot 19, Guilford Quarryman Q60, sold for $13,000 to Dadz Pastoral, Winkleigh Tas.
Quarryman was sired by Guilford Governor G38.
Among the volume buyers, A & S & B Velekoop, King Island, purchased three bulls including Lot 4, Guilford Qadar Q81, for $9000, Lot 9, Guilford Quiver Q146, for $5000 and Lot 21, Guilford Quota Q11, for $8000.
New buyers RW & M Spillane purchased Guilford Quadbike Q51 for the third top price of $10,000.
"We were pretty pleased with the sale and it was very good to get a good clearance," Mr Davie said.
