There was a slight softening of prices at the March Yea store sale, as producers started to bring forward spring-drop calves.
Agents yarded 2272 head of steers, heifers, cows and calves.
Elders Yea livestock manager Jamie Quinlan said agents and restockers were able to step in on the lighter weights.
"Overall it was a mixed yarding, there were all different breeds and ages," Mr Quinlan said.
"It might have been a fraction cheaper than last month."
But he said a run of 12 to 14 pens of about 250-260 spring-drop calves made up to 745 cents a kilogram.
"Your middle-weight cattle, the tail end of the autumn-drop calves, they were the ones that might have been fraction cheaper, at 460-500c/kg, whereas a month ago they were 500-540c/kg."
Mr Quinlan said JBS, along with commission buyers Andrew Lowe and Dennis Henderson, buying for Comdain, were the most active on the feedlot cattle.
A load went to Hopkins River and Jalna also bought cattle.
"Restockers and bullock fatteners were there buying them, or running second - commission buyer Andrew Lowe bought a hell of a lot of cattle."
Mr Quinlan said he was extremely happy with the dispersal of the 160-strong Kitelle females.
"The cattle presented very well, they were on the point of calving, they made up to $2975, mainly purchased to go back to Kilmore, Broadford and Darraweit Guim," Mr Quinlan said.
There were very few steers over 500kg, with the opening pens of heavier steers, between 450-500kg, making 416c/kg to 455c/kg.
Nutrien Ag Delaney Livestock and Property branch manager Anthony Delaney said the heavier run of heifers sold extremely well.
"In my mind, they were a little bit dearer than they have been," Mr Delaney said.
"Once you ran out of weight, things did cheapen off a little bit - I think it's a sign of the season dropping off."
It was still a very strong result.
"Andrew Lowe hasn't been able to operate for his northern orders but it's just come back that little bit, so that's allowed him to get back into the market."
He said producers were starting to get into the tail end of their autumn calves.
"We will find prices are flushing the spring calves out as the autumn calves are coming to an end."
Mr Delaney said steers over 400kg made 460-470c/kg, but it was softer on the 300-400kg bracket, which sold from $1560-$1570.
"They have been $1700-$1800," Mr Delaney said.
