Bairnsdale Hereford steers to 501c/kg during store market

Agents yarded about 600 cattle for the market which featured plenty of grown steers and heifers.

Elders Bairnsdale agent Aaron McCole said there were very few lighter pens of calves.

"You could almost count on one hand how many pens were below 350 kilos," Mr McCole said.

Bill Wyndham & Co livestock manager Colin Jones said the yarding had improved in quality compared to the previous February sale.

"Prices were very similar, if not up slightly thanks to support from locals and buyers from South Gippsland along with a small amount of feedlot support," Mr Jones said.

Sharp Fullgrabe director Graeme Fullgrabe said he noticed a decline in quality and demand.

"People are a bit dubious with the way the fat market is going at the moment so I think people are counting their dollars," Mr Fullgrabe said.

However, Nutrien East Gippsland Livestock manager Brad Obst said inquiry was consistent with previous markets.

"I thought it was good and it was a smaller yarding but some very good runs of cattle were keenly sought after," Mr Obst said.

Eileen Douglas, Benambra, sold seven steers, 575kg, for $2250 or 391c/kg.

I and M Brownrigg, Clifton Creek, sold 10 Black Baldy steers, 495kg, for $2200 or 444c/kg.

GW and LM Johnston, Walpa, sold seven Hereford steers, 564kg, for $2180 or 386c/kg and eight Hereford steers, 492kg, for $2050 or 416c/kg.

FC Gribenow & Son, Orbost, sold 18 Shorthorn heifers including nine, 510kg, for $2050 or 401c/kg and nine, heifers 473kg, for $1910 or 473c/kg.

WJC Pendergast, Benambra, sold nine Hereford steers, 359kg, for $1800 or 501c/kg and 10 Hereford heifers, 344kg, for $1560 or 453c/kg.

J & M Dwyer, Hillside, sold 11 Angus steers, 342kg, for $1710 or 500c/kg.
