A large crowd contributed to a strong market at the Warrnambool annual feature female and store cattle sale on Friday.
The yarding of 1350 head comprised several lines of females including the herd dispersals and these met strong competition.
The tops of the cows and calves sold to $3900 and most sold from $2900 to $3400.
Warrnambool Stock Agents Agents Association president Jack Kelly said the female section was always a feature of this sale, however there were additional consignments of heavier steers and younger cattle as well that were not advertised.
He said producers had "rounded up" what cattle they had remaining and came up with a few extra.
"We're really happy with the results. The heaviest steers were a pen of 35 account Roseneath North that weighed 523 kilograms and sold for 422 cents a kilogram or $2204 a head," he said.
"Those steers were heavier than we thought, so stock are doing very well," he said.
Cattle with weight had good strong support from feedlotters while local and South Australian support came in on the younger, lighter stock.
Plenty of people had feed and they were "looking for cattle".
Mr Kelly said the cows sold "above expectations" and that flowed through to the grown heifers.
