The Great Southern Supreme Show and Sale (GSSM) held in Canberra each January is one of the highlights of the Merino calendar and showcasing the breed.
It is therefore with regret George Merriman, Merryville, Boorowa, president of the GSSM committee announced the 2021 show and sale has fallen victim to the current social restrictions imposed due to COVID-19.
Mr Merriman said his committee had done their utmost to find a suitable venue and meet exhibitors expectations but to no avail.
"Unfortunately due to the Fitzroy Pavilion in Canberra and the Peden Pavilion at Goulburn being unavailable we have cancelled the Great Southern for 2021," he said.
"We look forward to your return in 2022 and thank for your support."
The decision has been accepted by Merino stud breeders who have supported the event for many years and have had sheep prepared for next year show circuit.
Doug Walker, Wongara Poll Merinos, Old Junee had entered a team of eight for the Canberra event and is obviously disappointed it has been cancelled for 2021.
"I can understand the committee's decision but I just hope it doesn't have a snowball affect," he said. "A lot of people have been preparing their sheep and if another major show has to be cancelled next year then perhaps a few might never return to the show circuit."
Mr Walker said he has never exhibited at the Sydney Royal but next year, if that event takes place, he is considering entering his team.
The status of the country shows is unknown at this moment but they could benefit from having a large Merino exhibition.
