Weaner heifers sold above 500 cents a kilogram at Kyneton on Wednesday in a market where feedlotters, restockers and processors battled for cattle.
Agents yarded 500 head for the monthly store sale where prices maintained strong rates, but eased slightly compared to the October market.
Elders Kyneton livestock manager Dean Coxon said the sale was marginally softer on the recent results, however, well-bred cattle still fetched very strong prices.
"It wasn't at the extreme levels we've seen at Ballarat and Yea recently," Mr Coxon said.
"We're starting to see the first runs of our autumn-drop weaners come in so the quality of the yarding was very strong."
The sale included 50 cows and calves, 150 heifers and about 300 steers.
A feature line was a draft of 100 Angus weaner mixed sex calves, 10 to 11 months, forwarded by Bassett & Roberts, Glenhope.
Their top 20 steers, 400kg, sold for $1800 or 450c/kg, their second pen of 32, 357kg, made $1760 or 492c/kg and their third pen of five, 317kg, made $1570 or 495c/kg.
The tops of the heifer portion, a pen of 15 weighing 333kg made $1650 or 495c/kg, and the second pen of 18, 295kg, $1510 or 511c/kg.
The top two pens of the steers were bought by Hopkins River Beef and the heifers went to local restockers.
Another feature line of the sale was 80 Angus, Black Baldy and Hereford mixed sex weaner calves, 9-14 moths, offered by G & N Bell, Barford.
Their top pen of their seven Angus steers, 405kg, made $1750 or 432c/kg, eight of their top Black Baldy steers, 408kg, made $1780 or 436c/kg, and 11 Angus steers, 339kg, made $1640 or 483c/kg.
Their top pen of nine Hereford steers, 386kg, made $1630 or 422c/kg.
The same vendor also sold nine Angus heifers, 331kg, for $1500 or 453c/kg.
McGrath Rodwells Livestock manager Kieran McGrath said the sale was a "tad cheaper" on some of the cattle that were not as well-bred.
"It was particularly a strong result though when you see what the fat market has done this week because it's got a bit cheaper everywhere," Mr McGrath said.
Landmark Kyneton livestock manager John Robson was also pleased with the result of the market.
"I don't think it hit the extremes that other markets have hit in the last few weeks but it was very, very strong," Mr Robson said..
