A strong weather system is likely to hit Victoria in the next couple of days, bringing with it the potential of damaging thunderstorms.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Chris Arvier said temperatures on Monday and Tuesday would be in their mid to high 20s - even up to their low 30s across the north of the state - but the fine weather wasn't going to last.
Mr Arvier said a significant change was going to move across the state on Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday.
"On Tuesday, the storm risk is most likely in the Wimmera and Mallee in the late afternoon," he said.
"They're likely to be quite dry thunderstorms, we're not expecting much in terms of precipitation.
"We could also expect some gusty winds in those storms, mainly in the afternoon and evening in north-west Victoria."
He said this would mean fire danger ratings would be in the very high range, particularly in the north-west of the state.
"[There's potential for fire given] those dry, northerly winds and dry fuel load," he said.
"[It's giving us] an indication that we're heading into the fire weather time of year."
Mr Arvier said on Wednesday, a significant cold front would move across the state.
"That will drive an area of thunderstorms right across western and central Victoria, mainly during the afternoon and evening on Wednesday," he said.
"These thunderstorms are likely to develop in the west of the state in the late morning and move through the central districts in the early evening."
He said it was looking like quite a significant system.
"These storms are likely to be severe," he said.
"We're expecting to see some damaging winds and rainfall."
He said in terms of rainfall, totals across the state would be "hit and miss".
"We'll be seeing falls of 5-10 millimetres across much of western central parts of the state, however some isolated, much heavier totals will be in the thunderstorms," he said.
"Some areas might get 50mm totals, but others are likely to miss out on the bulk of the rainfall."
He urged people to monitor online forecasts.
"We'll be monitoring storms closely and issuing warnings on our website," he said.
