Bernie Nevins, HF Richardson said while the quality wasn't there on the heavier cattle, the weaners sold "exceptionally well.
"We thought the heifers sold unbelievably well, that's when the job kicked again, on the 300-320kg heifers," Mr Nevins said,
"There were sales up to the high fives (hundred cents) on some little steers, with some heifers making 470 cents/kilogram too."
He said the last three yardings had seen cattle of exceptional quality, but at Friday's sale, there were a "few off-type cattle."
Commission buyer Campbell Ross, Duncan Brown and Peter Tuohey were active, along with several feedlots, including Charlton.
He said steers up to 300kg sold in the 450-540cents/kilogram range, while between 300-450kg, they made 420-450c/kg and the 450kg plus range sold from 390c/kg-410c/kg.
Lighter heifers also made between 450c/kg and 540c/kg.
"There were still good cattle, it's just that we had a lot more secondary type stock, people are not finishing the, they are selling now."
Leo White, TB White and Sons, agreed the run of grown steers wasn't as good in breeding, or quality, but still sold well.
"We had a very good run of weaners," Mr White said.
'We had some that were 20kg heavier, last sale, and they made $50 more this sale."
"People have realised unless they pay a minimum of minimum of $1300 up to $1400 for a smaller steer, they won't get them."
He predicted the market was reaching the top end.
"I think it will be another month to six weeks in it, the cattle will keep growing, but you won't get them."
"They are selling their spring drop calves and taking the money - a lot of those calves would have been kept for a little while.
"The heifers were very strong again, I saw 313kg heifers selling for 472/kg - more people are buying them to tuck away and breed from later."
Grant Daniell, Charles Stewart, said it was a better sale, than last month, particularly on the heifers, with prices about 10c/kg higher.
Terry Ginnane, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Yarram, bought heifers while cattle also went to Yea.
"There were a few of the abattoirs - you had BMC, Hardwicks, Midfield was here, but I don't think they played, Westside had a little bit of a dabble."
Agents representing restockers from Yea, Myrtleford, Albury and Gippsland were also active.
"The quality of the yarding was still pretty good, there were a lot of smaller cattle in under the 300kg and, getting down to 200kg," Mr Daniell said.
