Rainfall totals of 15 to 30 millimetres are possible across a wide area of Victoria this weekend.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Efron said the Wimmera in particular could expect the heaviest totals of 20 to 30mm.
He said that showers would hit Melbourne from midnight Friday and into early Saturday.
With the rain becoming heavier across the city throughout the afternoon and evening totals could reach 15 to 30mm.
The rainfall was expected to extend into the Wimmera while falls throughout the south-west could total 10 to 20mm.
The focus of the heavier rain was through the Wimmera, the north-east and central parts as well into western parts of Gippsland.
Further falls of 5 to 15mm in the north east could be expected on Sunday, with only light falls in east Gippsland, he said.
Mr Efron said the strong northerly winds on Friday would ease.
Early next week a cool start Monday and Tuesday was expected and warmer temperatures by Wednesday.
