Consistent rainfall across parts of Gippsland bolstered buying support at Bairnsdale's fortnightly store cattle sale on Friday.
Agents yarded about 550 cattle, up 400 head on the previous sale, with heavy steers selling to $2030.
Bullock fatteners from South Gippsland and farmers from the Bairnsdale district were active and buying cattle for restocking after widespread rain this month.
Sharp Fullgrabe director Graeme Fullgrabe, who sold a bulk of the yarding, said agents and farmers were replacing tyres on their vehicles because of how much rain had fallen recently.
"It's wet and people are getting bogged ... it's something a lot of us are not used to," Mr Fullgrabe said.
He said the top heifers sold from 385c/kg to 440c/kg on average, while steer calves ranged from 435c/kg to 518c/kg.
"I had orders to go elsewhere and the rates they gave me, 430c/kg and 440c/kg for steers, I couldn't compete with," he said.
"We started the draft on heavy cross-bred steers weighing 622 kilograms to 496 kilos and they ranged from 1790 to 1740."
Ian Web, Munro, sold a draft of Angus, Hereford and Angus Hereford-cross steers including his first pen of 10 Angus steers, 523kg, which made $2030 or 388c/kg.
Melrose Herefords, Cann River, sold a pen of steers, 471kg, for $1910 or 405c/kg.
GL Baird, Orbost, sold the dearest steer pen on a cents per kilogram basis, receiving 518c/kg for a pen of 17 Black Baldy calves, 266kg, which made $1380.
DK and SL Faithfull, Buchan, sold a pen of 18 weaner Angus steers, 338kg, for $1530 or 452c/kg.
D and K Sederlan sold the dearest pen of heifers with two Angus, 532kg, which made $1640 or 308, followed by 11 Charolais heifers by O Herman, 336kg, which made $1300 or 386c/kg.
Commission buyer Peter Lee, Garrison Cattle Feeders, bought a load of female cattle.
Nutrien East Gippsland manager Brad Obst said the sale was "very good".
"We had a good pen of heifers from the Simpson family at Hollands Landing, 357 kilos, make $1485 and they went to a local grass fattener," Mr Obst said.
