Fennec Pour-On for Sheep is the newest addition to Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health's sheep product range and provides the power of two actives in combination to deliver highly effective knockdown control of lice, all in the convenience of a pour-on.
According to Dr Gareth Kelly, Boehringer Ingelheim's cattle and sheep technical manager, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health has a strong focus on developing innovative products and services to contribute to farm animal well-being and meet the needs of their customers.
Fennec is a direct result of this, after years of research and development and trials in key locations across Australia, which has culminated in an innovative product for sheep producers that delivers combination lice control and the longest protective period of any knockdown product.
"Fennec offers outstanding knockdown lice control when used within 24 hours off shears. It will protect from re-infestation for a class-leading five weeks, giving sheep producers peace of mind and greater flexibility with their shearing and farm management plan," Dr Kelly said.
Fennec is an Australian-first - a double active sheep louciside, containing imidacloprid and abamectin, a highly potent chemical combination against sheep louse Bovicola ovis.
A combination ensures a high level of lice control, and delays the development of lice resistance to any one active.
"If insect resistance was to develop against one active, then the other active will still be effective," Dr Kelly said.
"Each active protects the other, thereby improving the sustainability of the product and its ability to continue to work well into the future. This alleviates the need for producers to rotate between single actives, saving time and hassle."
Dr Kelly said that Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health conducted field trials on Merino sheep of mixed sex and age throughout different climatic zones across Australia.
"We looked at the effectiveness of Fennec on naturally occurring populations of lice. The results showed excellent treatment of lice infestation under these varying field conditions," Dr Kelly said.
We're excited to bring this comprehensive and flexible lice treatment to sheep producers across Australia to form a reliable and effective part of their flock management program.

"For instance, in dryer zones lice prevalence is more common, and Fennec will be an ideal fit. In these zones, producers might not be doing routine inspections on the sheep as frequently. Often, the first sign of a lice problem is when producers see pulled wool.
"Fennec offers both knockdown and persistent control of lice to ensure wool quality is maintained.
"Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health has a track record of bringing innovative combinations to the market, such as Triguard Triple Combination Sheep Drench and Dynamax Combination Capsules, and Fennec is continuing this tradition of innovation.
"We're excited to bring this comprehensive and flexible lice treatment to sheep producers across Australia to form a reliable and effective part of their flock management program," Dr Kelly said.
Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health provides advanced, preventive animal healthcare through the development of vaccines, parasiticides and pharmaceuticals that protect animals against disease and pain. Across the globe, they are creating the future of animal wellbeing. It is a future defined by science and powered by innovation.
