IT'S a celebration of new and old at this year's Glen Innes Whiteface Sale, with the 2020 event the 75th sale for one long-term supporter, and the first for a pair of young brothers from Warwick.

There were big plans to celebrate the sale's 75th year, but the longest running Hereford multi-vendor sale, like many others, will have to make some changes to be run under COVID-19 restrictions.

"Unfortunately with what's happening we're going to have the normal sale but at this stage we won't have the function on Thursday night, depending on the restrictions at the time," sale committee chairman Angus Vivers said.

"The past two years have been tough with the drought, and considering the current season it could have been a really good event."

Many people in the Hereford breed have had a long association with the sale, whether as a buyer or vendor.

"It's good starting point for a lot of studs, but there are a lot of established studs coming back every year," Mr Vivers said.

"I'm not from a stud background but my family has been buying out of Glen Innes since 1949.

"It's tremendous effort that we've been able to keep the sale going for 75 years - that's a credit to the committee and the vendors who continue to support the sale."

On offer this year are 62 high quality whiteface bulls.

Last year's sale topper, $14,000 Hereford Supple Naked with Supple stud principals Ben and Leanne Rumbel; Ashley Estcourt, Nunniong Herefords, Omeo, Victoria; Elders agent Andrew Meara and new owner Bluey Commins, Ensay, Victoria.

"The agents who have been inspecting the bulls on farm are saying this year's bulls are of higher quality than in previous years," Mr Vivers said.

"Many of our vendors have been affected by drought for the past few years and they've had to decrease numbers, so they've kept only their best genetics, and these bulls are the product of that."

Young studmasters and stalwarts of the Hereford breed will come together for this year's sale.

Vendors range from Queensland brothers Lachlan, 16, and Riley Bacon, 12, who run Ownaview stud at Warwick and will have three bulls in this year's sale, to Dundee Echo Park Herefords stud principal Roger Kneipp who has been at every event.

Mr Kneipp has been a vendor since 1990 with Echo Park stud, and his father and uncle were vendors from the late 1940s under the Dundee prefix.

"Roger was first taken to this sale in a pram and he's been to every sale since," Mr Vivers said.

"Another of our vendors who has been in the sale for a long time is Bruce Gunning from Emu Holes at Quirindi. He's been buying and selling there since about 1980."

"It's a sale for every stud, big and small, new and established."

Returning to the multi-vendor sale after running on-property sales for many years is Walcha breeder Chris Lisle, Tummel Herefords.

"He's got eight bulls in this year's sale and they're eight of the best bulls he's ever presented," Mr Vivers said.

This year's sale will be run at Glen Innes on July 24, under the COVID-19 restrictions at the time, but bidding will also be available via AuctionsPlus.

The full catalogue with sale and lot details will be available in mid-June, and photos and videos of each lot will be available on AuctionsPlus.
