HIGH quality, commercially-oriented cattle are the focus for Lucrana Simmentals, and the Queensland stud has another 56 bulls on offer in its July 3 sale.

Lucrana was established in 1986 as a traditional herd, but the Moore family has since added red and black cattle into the stud.

The herd is run under strict commercial conditions in hilly country, resulting in functional females with outstanding constitution and fertility.

The stud, based on the Queensland and New South Wales border near Texas, has become one of the leading Simmental studs in the country, with 300 performance recorded females.

Stud principal Andrew Moore has focused on breeding polled cattle for many years, and 80 per cent of this year's sale bulls are polled.

"With the cost of handfeeding during the drought we made the decision to only retain the very best calves as bulls, which means that all working age bulls are catalogued for the sale," Mr Moore said.

"Normally we would have about 30 paddock bulls available later in the season but this year the sale is the only opportunity to secure a Lucrana bull."

The bulls range from 19 to 26 months of age, and the catalogue includes some impressive sons of first season sires Wormbete Lincoln (P), Billa Park Maximum Impact (P), and Lucrana Legend (P).

There are seven Black Simmental bulls in the draft.

"While they're mature enough to start working, the younger bulls are considered an ideal choice for herds not looking to join until the spring, which gives buyers the opportunity to take them home and acclimatise them prior to joining."

The stud concentrates on soft, easy-doing bloodlines that produce progeny which will finish easily, with a preference for polled genetics and good skin and hair type.

"Two bulls of interest this year are two full brothers which are the result of imported embryos from New Zealand," Mr Moore said.

"I selected the dam, Kerrah 111(P), as a donor due to her fleshing ability and suitability to Australian conditions.

"The sire Marchant Impecable boasts the leading combination of 400- and 600-day growth figures on the Trans Tasman Simmental Breedplan analysis and is an outcross sire to the Australian industry."

Lucrana bulls have been blooded with tick fever vaccine for entry into tick-affected areas, and they only have a short sale preparation - they're not led or overfed.

The stud has clients from the Northern Rivers area of NSW through to central and north west Qld.

"This is a very robust group of commercially orientated bulls that have been produced from a cow herd which is run under strictly commercial conditions," Mr Moore said.

"It is therefore not surprising that the Lucrana cattle have earned a reputation for adapting to and handling some of more challenging environments where Euro bulls may often struggle to adapt."

The sale will be held on-property, 35km south east of Texas, on Friday, July 3, beginning at 12pm.

Buyers will be able to attend in person, with the sale conducted according to COVID-19 restrictions, but bidding is also available online via Elite Livestock Auctions.

Buyers can make an appointment to inspect the bulls prior to the sale, and Mr Moore can help them select bulls suited to their operation.

All visitors to Qld must obtain a border pass through the Qld Goverment.

As with previous sales, Lucrana is offering free delivery throughout Qld and northern NSW.
