Despite the quality of the Wodonga yarding being back on a fortnight ago, prices continued to rise.
Brian Unthank livestock agent, Michael Unthank said the 2534 head of cattle on offer attracted 20 to 40 cents more per kilogram than last sale.
The few cows yarded sold from $900 to $1600 a head, while cow and calf units made up to $2625, five Angus cow and calves from DS and CG Varker, Chiltern, Vic, attracting the top price.
Pregnancy-tested-in-calf heifers sold for up to $2140/head for a pen of 12 Angus, weighing an average of 560kg and offered by IGN Paton and Co, Fenwick, Thowgla, Vic.
Mr Unthank said feeder steers across all breeds and weight categories topped at 420-430 cents per kilogram, 30 to 40 cents higher than a fortnight ago.
A pen of four Angus steers, offered by G and CM Burrowes and weighing an average of 486kg made the best of the steers, selling for $1900/head.
Account of BW Haynes, Yackandandah, Vic, sold 13 Charolais Cross steers, weighing an average of 471kg for $1850.
Lighter steers, weighing from 150-250kg made from 380-460c/kg.
Mr Unthank said feeder heifers were 20 to 30 cents dearer this week, selling from around 340c/kg up to 370-380c/kg.
Account of M Freebairn, Diamond Creek, Vic, received the top price for both the yearling steers and heifers. Her pen of two Angus Cross steers weighing 343kg sold for $1190, while four Angus Cross heifers weighing 301kg made $1050/hd.
Mr Unthank said the strength of the sale was due to the presence of northern feedlot competition.
"The local guys were having to tack on lighter cattle with that sort of money," Mr Unthank said.
While, up to 90 per cent of the cattle yarded were from the greater Wodonga region.
Mr Unthank said he thought the large numbers they had seen in recent weeks could not continue.
"If anyone had any cattle to sell I think they would have been selling them in the last fortnight with the big price rise, I think it's flushed a lot of cattle out," Mr Unthank said.
"But, if the numbers drop, that could mean the price will stay solid."
