Stock &amp; Land Beef Week headed into western Victoria and across the border into south-eastern South Australia for day seven. The beef cattle studs that opened today included Bra-Ma, Caladenia, Cara, Chalon, Cope, Ebernezer Park, Mount Gambier, Rellum Farms, Banemore, Bassano, Eloora, Glenfern, Grangeburn, Kurra-Wirra, Lindsay, Melville Park, Moora, Morgiana House, Murdeduke, Pathfinder, Shady Park, Taronga, Weeran and Wilkah. The day was the perfect opportunity for stud principals to show off their breeding stock and properties. Were you there? MOORA: Stud principal Linton Price, Moora Hereford (Poll)Landmark Mt Gambier agent Roy Wilson, and Neil Kerr, Drick Drick, who has previously bought Moora bulls. Mr Price said all the bulls were for sale by private selection. Her said they didn't pump their bulls up.Mr Price said he was looking forward to seeing calves from an ET sire, Days Godfather that they bought last year for $10,000.

BASSANO: Jane and Ron Stewart with some of the Bassano sale bulls. Ms Stewart said they had sold 12 bulls by midday. She said there would be bulls available after the day as well. She said they were excited to see calves from AI sire Ayrvale Hercules H9.

RELLUM FARMS: Rellum Farms Simmental stud principal Grantley Muller and daughter Nicole with some of the bulls they displayed at Mt Gambier. Mr Muller said the stud herd comprised about 100 breeders. He said all retained calves were polls. He said the shift to polls was an important  for safety and ease of handling. He sad the stud had a couple of young sires coming through in the next 12 months..

COPE: It was the first display atg Mount Gambier and Beef Week for Paul Cotterill, Cope Red Angus stud. The locally located stud started breeding Red Angus in 2005 having previously been a Hereford herd. The operation comprises a nucleus registered herd as well as a large commercial herd. Mr Cotterill said he used the stud's Red Angus bulls over the commercial cows. He said the Beef Week concept at Mt Gambier worked very well. He said the day was above expectations.

BRA-MA: Bray Malseed, Bra-Ma Hereford stud, displayed a selection of Hereford bulls for sale. He said they normally sold around eight to ten bulls each year from the registered herd of 100 cows. As well as the cattle stud he runs a flock of 2000 composite ewes

EBERNEZER PARK: Ebernezer Park South Devon stud principal Sarah Bolte and daughter Stephanie, Greenwald, with some of the stud's young bulls. Ms Bolte said the bulls were sought after for use in cross-breeding programs. Sires used included a Babrooten bull and Kildare Kaiser.

CARA PARK: Visitor and previous buyer Robert Featherston, MacArthur, with Ainsley and Roz Curtis, Cara Park Salers, Ob Flat via Mt Gambier. Pictured with one of the stud's bulls for sale, Cara Park Patrick, sired by Cara Park Henry. Ms Curtis said they liked to show their cattle as well to bring the breed to a wider audience.

MT GAMBIER: Handler Hannah Kuhl-Miller and Mt Gambier Limousin stud principal Jason Malseed, with a 2019-drop bull calf on display. Mr Malseed said the young bull was by one of the stud's older bulls - Kodiak. He said he had retained some semen from the sire. The bull calf would be shown in Adelaide and Melbourne.

CALADENIA: Caladenia Limousin stud principal, Michael Black, Allendale East, with two of the studs bulls that were offered for sale at Mt Gambier. Mr Black said he had sold three bulls, all locally, and mainly into Angus/Friesian-cross herds. Sires used included AI sire Wulfs Amazing, which was an easy calving sire.

CALADENIA: Limousin bulls from Caladenia stud at Mt Gambier.

CHALON: Two 13-month-old Maine-Anjou bull calves with Chalon stud principal Margaret Williams. Ms Williams said they would collect semen from the calf to use in the herd. She said AI was a quick herd-improver. She exhibits with Graham Sims who runs a Hereford (Poll) stud. Ms Williams said they'd had success on the show scene with their cattle. She said they liked to show their cattle as a way of getting an idea of where they were going with their breeding.

CHALON: Young Maine-Anjou bulls on display at the Chalon pens at Mt Gambier.

MORGIANA: 	Allan and Jenny Crozier, Morgiana Charolais, said they would be offering 20 Charolais bulls, including yearlings, at this year's sale. The season had been “incredible," Mr Crozier said. The talk of every sale you go to is how much hay they have cut. We haven’t had the fires, and have just had rain, to dampen down the dust.” Mr Crozier said he expected to sell to repeat buyers, some of whom had been coming for 20 years. Bulls would sell from Millicent, SA. to Geelong.


MORGIANA: Charolais sale bulls at Morgiana.

BOONAROO: The Hamilton and Casterton Angus stud has again entered this year’s RASV Heifer Challenge. Stud principal Jodie Foster said the stud hoped to offer 120 high-growth bulls, on sale day. She said she found it useful to bring the heifers, to the Hamilton yards.
“People can see the female version, of the bulls they are looking at, and see what they will grow into, as females, so we always try to have plenty of females for clients.” It had been one of the busiest open days Boonaroo held. “People are going out with the thought that it has rained, and it should be a good season.” Ms Foster was with Peter Bateman, Millicent, SA.


BOONAROO: BOONAROO:  Stud principal Jodie Foster said the stud hoped to offer 120 high-growth bulls, on sale day. 

BOONAROO: The Hamilton and Casterton stud attracted strong interest, on the back of rain and growing confidence in the industry.

BOONAROO: Among the visitors to Boonaroo were Angus Australia chair Brad Gilmour, Terang, and Matt Reynolds, Armidale, NSW.

BANEMORE: The Poll Hereford stud will hold its final sale in early March, as it disperses its stud herd. Partner David Jenkin said a switch to commercial cattle and sheep meant the 39th sale would be the last. “Its a passion I had, and I wanted to do it, while the genetics were up, really high,” Mr Jenkin said. “The cattle will be presented in really great condition.”
He said he hoped loyal clients, including those from King Island, would take part in the auction, which would feature 50 years of breeding. “We have been commercially focused on easy doing cattle, which can make money on high stocking rates." Mr Jenkin is with Jonathon and Jo.


BANEMORE: The stud will be dispersed at its 39th, and final, sale, on March 5.

BANEMORE: Heifer Challenge judges Noelene King and Rick Smith started their day at Banemore.

PATHFINDER: Stud principal Nick Moyle said he would be offering around 120 Angus bulls, later this month. They came from the Pathfinder Genesis, General and Complete bloodlines.“We have a few outside bulls, which have given us a bit of outcross bloodlines,” Mr Moyle said. “It’s been a fantastic season, I think we had one of the toughest autumns, but one of the best springs and our bulls have really benefitted from that.”


PATHFINDER: There was a big crowd at Pathfinder Angus stud, Gazette.

PATHFINDER: Robert and Simon Cuzens, Woolsthorpe, were with Bruce Bell, Bell Livestock, at Pathfinder.

PATHFINDER: Well-known livestock identity Willie Mline, with wife Joanne, was with Ian Bates, Riddell Vue, Alexandra.

PATHFINDER: The Rentsch family, Byaduk, started off at Pathfinder, before Graham and Julie went off to another stud, while Elaine and Ozzie visited another one.

GLENFERN: The Tahara Poll Hereford stud principals James and Catherine Humphries said 40 years of breeding was on show, at the open day. “The sale bulls are rising two-year olds, grass fed, and not over fattened.” He said the bulls had been bred for ease of birth and quiet temperament. In the last year, he said the stud had bought semen from dispersal sales, with the progeny now on the ground. Buyers were seeking the bulls to breed weaners and bullocks. “It’s been a good spring, but a very tough start to the year - we’ve ended up with good feed and good hay supplies, so that’s a blessing."


GLENFERN: Several of the bulls, on display at Glenfern.

GLENFERN: Phil Gay came over to Glenfern to see James and Catherine Humphries; he'd previously sold cattle to the Tahara stud.

SHADY PARK: Stud principal Rebecca Rundell said she’d made some early sales, at her Branxholme Angus property. “There were definitely some keen people visiting, and some interest early,” Ms Rundell said. “We have had return, and new clients, from the local area.” She said she, and partner Scott Davis, were focussing on the commercial market, in the local area.


SHADY PARK: The stud has used Shadwell Park and Banquet Angus bloodlines.

SHADY PARK: Ebony Churchill, Portland, Dean Zordan and Lyn de Wyse, Milltown, were visting close friend Rebecca Rundell of Shady Park.

WEERAN: Weeran stud principal Alec Moore said it had been a great season and a good line up of Angus bulls would go under the hammer, at this year’s auction. “I think it’s never looked that good, in agriculture, for us in the south. Everyone else in the country has had extraordinary hardship, but we have managed to get some very good seasons,” Mr Moore said. He said the bulls were “right up in the stirrups. We have a larger contingency of two-year old bulls, quite a lot of embryo transplant work has been done there, really leading edge genetics, and we have about 40-odd spring drop bull - I think, genetically, they are as good, if not better, than anything we have produced in the past.” He was with Leah Drendel, Bryce McDonald and Tom French.

WEERAN: The stud will sell the final offering of is Millah Murrah bred embryos at this year's sale.

MURDEDUKE @ HAMILTON: Murdeduke principal Lachie Wilson said the study used the Hamilton property as a display base, to open up its cattle to different clients. “It works well, we are on the eastern end, at Winchelsea, so it gives people another option.”  He said Murdeduke was hoping to offer about 80 bulls, at this year’s sale.”At the end of the day, if you breed them, you might as well give yourself the best chance of selling them.” Mr Wilson was with Barry Godbolt, Rob Onley and Tim Wright.


MURDEDUKE @ HAMILTON: Bulls displayed at Hamilton will go under the hammer at the Winchelsea selling complex.

MURDEDUKE @ HAMILTON: Peter and Punay Holmes, Drik Drik, were looking at replacement bulls.

ELOORA: Eloora Shorthorn Stud Principal Dion Brook (right) with nephews Dillon and James Dawson standing with two of the 27 bulls for sale at the stud.  Eloora take part in the Naracoorte sale on 26th of March and will be sending seven bulls over on the day.

TARONGA: Steve Taylor from RASV, Bill Lambert Taronga Herefords, Geoff Lambert Taronga Herefords and cattle judge Rick Smith before the judging of the RASV Heifer Challenge at Taronga Herefords, Paschendale.


TARONGA: Taronga Herefords' P10 was the top price bull on the day at $8000.

LINDSAY: Lindsay Murray Grey Stud Principal Craig Grant (right) with cattle buyer Stephen Baker of H.W. Greenham & Sons of Hamilton with Lots 1, 2 and 3 in their upcoming sale on 25th February.  Lindsay have a breeding strategy to produce quality Murray Greys that are industry relevant and adaptable to market and client needs.

WILKAH: Ange and Will Lyons of Wilkah Herefords with rising 2 year old bulls behind them. The bull standing to the left is Lot 3 in the sale catalogue, son of Quamby Plains Jabiru.

KURRA WIRRA: Simon Close of Kurra Wirra is with 9 year old G98 Red Angus/Senepol.  Simon is working towards his bull sale in Barcaldine on Friday 6th March and is preparing 50 Angus/Senepol bulls and seven black Senegus bulls.

MELVILLE PARK: David Lyons of Melville Park Herefords with Nathan Roberts and son Kaidyn Roberts with bulls prepared for sale day on the 2nd of March. Melville Park was a finalist in the RASV Heifer Challenge last year and David was very happy with his heifer group this year.

GRANGEBURN: Brodhi Carracher of Grangeburn Simmentals (right) with Bill Graham of ABS Genetics. Brodhi has been busy building numbers this year including buying 60 embryos from Canada, 25 of them due in April. He is keen to build quality into his herd using current top-market genetics from overseas.
