The continued good season in the south-west saw agents reporting solid restocker support at the monthly Warrnambool store cattle sale.
Agents yarded around 860 cattle, mainly from the south-west.
Jack Kelly, J&J Kelly, said while some of the cattle were still showing the effects of winter, it was a good sale for both buyers and sellers.
"There was still some feedlot activity," Mr Kelly said.
"But a lot of local people are looking for cattle, as it's a very good season down here.
"Every weekend, it seems to rain."
He said 450-kilogram steers topped at 316 cents a kilogram.
"In the open auction, Angus and Black Baldy steers made up to $1040 [a head]," he said.
He said it was also a good heifer sale, with one pen of Angus females, 496kg, making 300c/kg.
There was solid activity on the cows and calves.
Mr Kelly said buyers came from Mount Gambier, SA, to Geelong, "where the feed is".
"We had really happy vendors, and for anyone looking for cattle, it was a wonderful opportunity," he said.
He said there was also solid activity on the cows and calves, particularly those with June to August-drop calves.
"There's feed out there and people are looking for something to buy with a calf at foot," Mr Kelly said.
Josh McDonald, Saffin Kerr Bowen Rodwells, said it was a very strong sale across the board
Mr McDonald said good open auction cattle met with strong demand from local restockers.
"The whole job was fully firm," he said.
"Local restockers were active on the lighter end, while Creek, [SA], bought quite a few on the heavier end."
Warrnambool Stock Agents Association president Kieran Johnston said the sale was $200-300 a head above expectations.
"It was right through the grown steers, and the open auction steers sold very well too," Mr Johnston said.
"Cows with spring-drop calves sold to $1850 and open auction and crossbred cattle also sold very well."
