Online livestock selling app 'a success'

FarmGate Auctions director Guy Gallen said the sale exceeded expectations and attracted buyers from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

"[Buyers] were impressed with how easy our platform was to use and how clean the live auction process was," Mr Gallen said.

"They were particularly excited that our lots time out and they can bid, buy and walk away in as little as 40 minutes."

The auction recorded a total sales volume of $227,384 with six vendors and 17 registered bidders.

Sold listings included 95 Hereford Banoon heifers from Barraba PTIC 22-24 months which sold at $890 and 30 Angus steers 15-18 months from Loomberah, Tamworth which sold for $1010 a head.

Twenty-nine Daisy Plain, Gunnedah Angus heifers 12-24 months fetched 260 cents a kilogram while 63 Charolais, Hereford cross weaned heifers 8-12 months from Boonery Park, Curlewis sold for $525.

Thirty-two Wagyu steers and heifers were passed in.

The app is set to rival AuctionsPlus, another online livestock selling platform which has dominated the marketplace for the best part of two decades.

Mr Gallen said FarmGate Auctions would host fortnightly online cattle sales from next Tuesday until the app developed a strong clientele base.

He said between seven and 12 buyers and sellers were registering on the FarmGate app on a daily basis.

"We were extremely pleased with the results with our clearance rates and we hope to go weekly, but as far as numbers go at the moment we hope to go every fortnight," he said.

"We need to build our support base, both buyers and sellers, so we need to keep working hard to promote it and ensure people give us a go.

"I'm under no illusions it's going to be a hard old slog but now people have a choice. Before us there was only one other player so this will give people a more choice when they are looking to buy and sell."
