South Gippsland fatteners flock to store Sale

Greenwood Livestock managing director Ben Greenwood, who had about 400 cattle at the sale, said quality steers and heifers were in hot demand.

"Our top lines included David Bates' (Munro) 40 AI Angus steers to the Milwillah Elsom bull which weighed 350 kilos and made 353 cents a kilo," he said.

"A repeat buyer from Leongatha bought 40 350-kilo weaned steers from Tablelands Pastoral at Boisdale and they made 335 cents a kilogram.

"There were patches in the sale thought and buyers were very selective but overall the cattle sold well."

Lighter cattle were snapped up by Landmark International for an export order while heavier cattle were mainly bought by bullock fatteners in South Gippsland.

Rodwells auctioneer Anthony Delaney said the sale had more cattle compared to previous store markets.

"We had some feature lines there which are synonymous with local breeders in the central Gippsland area and they were very keenly sought after," he said.

"Geoffrey Bates from Munro had 153 Angus steers and 150 Angus heifers and the steers sold between 330 to 360 a kilo and the heifers from 280 to 300."

"All the steers are going back to South Gippsland bullock fatteners and the heifers will either stay local or head to feedlots."
