THERE were several stud buyers that the Armstrong family had caught the eye of during the past show season, with several lining up to take home new stud sires at the annual Armdale and Armdale Park Poll Dorset ram sale last Friday.
In the wrap up, 194 of 209 rams sold to a top of $7500 to average a respectable $1618, with all 24 stud rams selling to the sale top of $7500 to record a $2858 average, while 170 of 185 flock rams cleared to $2800 tops to average $1443.
The top ram AP 123-18, was secured by Dennis and Dane Rowley, Springwaters Poll Dorsets. Boorowa, for $7500, scanning seven millimeters for fat and 38.50 square centimeters eye muscle area.
Dane Rowley said they liked the meat Garry Armstrong was putting in his rams and where they were going with their breeding program.
"We have been watching Garry's sheep all year and spotted this bloke at Bendigo and gave him the once over and were blown away with his shape and hindquarters," he said.
Young budding stud breeder Angus Webb, Mooray Pty Ltd, Yerong Creek, is in the process of setting his own stud up after having a small flock of stud ewes for some time.
He snapped up the top Armdale stud ram in A114-18, a 137 kilogram sire with a 43.66cm EMA, he thought had tremendous length and structural correctness that would help him take the next step in starting his stud.
AD and SC Wilson, Eureka, Taragoi, took home AP120-18 for $6500, a sire with plenty of accolades throughout the show season including first and second bare shorn ram at Gundagai and Canberra respectively.
Karl Sinclair, Kinsdale Poll Dorsets, Orange, came to buy a single ram and left with three due to the the great genetics horsepower these rams offered at the prices they went for.
"I was looking for stud sires with scale, good wool and clean points." he said.
I have followed lot one in the sale since Canberra when he was 10 months of age, through to him being a stylish woolly ram at 150kg.
"I was chasing woolly rams that had high EMA's and weighed over 150kg and the two woolly rams were over 150kg and scanned 48.61 and 51.67 for EMA.
As the stud buyers left the sale ring the flock volume buyers pressed their cases pushing flock rams to $2800 when CJ Wilkson, Oivi, Wantabadgery, launched into two he liked at this top money, before repeat buyer Terry McNaughton followed suit paying to $2400 for seven rams to average $2086.
Sandy Tait, Gunnong, Jugurah, Coolac, set the floor price buying 14 at $1129, while Kooinga partnership, Kooringa, Coolamon, loaded 11 rams at $1536 and the Milson family, Cardross, Goulburn, purchased eight for a $1438 average.
Rounding out the sale of volume buyers was Lugano Pastoral Company, Rugby, with nine at $1067, while fellow local's Riverview Wallah, Rugby, secured three selected stud rams and five flock rams, averaging $1675 and Burgess Hill Pastoral Company, Coolamon, bought eight at the same $1675 money to finish the sale.
The sale was conducted by Elders and Landmark with Steve Ridley and Hamish McGeoch as the auctioneers.
