WHITE SUFFOLK
Supreme exhibit: Mallee Park, Hopetoun
Champion ram: Mallee Park, Hopetoun
Reserve: Ashley Park, Bairnsdale
Most successful: Ashley Park
IT was a ram-only affair in the White Suffolk judging at the Royal Melbourne Show on the weekend, and two studs from opposite sides of Victoria dominated.
The Ferguson family of Mallee Park stud at Hopetoun exhibited the grand champion and supreme exhibit White Suffolk ram.
It was a grandson of their successful Mallee Park Cruiser line, and the ram will be offered at the stud's on-property sale being held on Thursday.
Mallee Park 416-18 weighed in at 151 kilograms with 9 millimetres of fat, a muscle depth of 59mm and a muscle width of 102mm, equating to a muscle area of 46.3 square centimetres.
Judge David Pipkorn, Depta Grove stud, Lake Hindmarsh, said the supreme ram carried itself well on its feet and legs and had great type out front.
"It was the sheer volume that got him champion ram," Mr Pipkorn said.
Reserve champion ram was Ashley Park 501-18, from the Kyle family of Ashley Park stud, Bairnsdale.
The August-drop ram was 114kg, had 7mm of fat with a muscle depth of 51mm and width of 99mm.
Mr Pipkorn said the ram was a close contender, with a great front, tremendous length, and well set up in the back end.
Ashley Park also exhibited the winning sires progeny group, the breeders group and were most successful exhibitors.
