Euroa cattle easier on season uncertainty

The yarding consisted of some good quality Angus weaners weighing between 280-360 kilograms, but dropped off quickly to calves weighing under 200kg.

Scott Meehan, Rodwells, Euroa, said farmers in the area were heading into an unknown weather pattern.

"The days are drawing out longer and the temperature is warming up," he said.

"Most of the North East has good feed now but signs of grass turning under trees shows that the sub soil moisture is drying up at a quick rate."

Mr Meehan said the uncertainty of the spring had pulled farmers up on some purchasing therefore creating the cheaper trend.

He said that in the north, store cattle were dominating markets as tough conditions escalated.

"Therefore, buyers have plenty to choose from at the moment and can afford to be picky on purchases," he said.

Buyers attended from Alexandra, Shepparton, Benalla, Wangaratta, Bendigo, Wodonga, Kilmore and local buyers.

In the steer section a pen of 22 Angus, 360kg, sold account R & K McFarlane, for $1140 or 316 cents a kilogam.

Marnong sold a draft of 64 Angus steers with the tops of 20, 310kg, making $970 or 312c/kg. Twenty steers, 282kg, made $905 or 321c/kg and the light end of 24 steers, 253kg sold for 340c/kg.

Flat Rock sold six Angus steers,12- 13 months, 393kg that made $1235 or 314c/kg.

Fifteen Angus steers sold account B Carey, 12 months, 341kg, made $990 or 291c/kg, while Kalimna sold 22 Angus steers, 240kg, that made $860 or 358c/kg.

D & J Devanny, Gooram, solf a draft5 of mixed sex Angus with the steer portion of 16, 284kg seling for $900 or 316c/kg. The heifer portion comprised a pen of 12, weighing 279kg, that sold for $780 or 279c/kg.

Other lines of heifers included eight from Flat Rock that were 12-13 months and weighed 352kg. These sold for $980, or278c/kg.

The heifer portion of the Marnong consignment comprised eight weighing 354kg and selling for $990 or 279c/kg.

A Beard's pen of 12 Angus heifers sold for $1060 or 279c/kg on weights of 379kg.
