A yarding of around 350 cattle was penned at Kyneton as producers ponder feed and weather.
Few lines of cattle were penned and cattle generally lacked weight, but quality was good.
Landmark livestock agent John Robson, Kyneton, said that heading into spring, local producers had mostly sold what they needed to and would carry the rest through.
He said there was a limited selection available for buyers with steers selling between 305 and 340 cents a kilogram while heifers were generally light in weight and were bought to go back to the paddock.
Elders auctioneer Dean Coxan, Kyneton, said it was a solid sale with locals just starting to look at buying.
One pen of heavy Hereford steers, 515kg, sold for $1360, or 264c/kg. The pen of five was sold account Holloway.
M Stewart sold eight Angus steers, 290kg, for $990, or 341c/kg.
Thirteen Angus steers sold account Watson Park weighed 325kg and made $1020, or 313c/kg, while two Angus steers account Sciortino weighed 320kg and sold for $950, or 296c/kg.
P Gooch, consigned a draft of Poll Hereford steers, Days blood, with the tops selling in a pen of 10, 379kg, selling for $1170, or 308c/kg. The seconds were in a pen of nine, 320kg, that sold for $970, or 303c/kg.
In the heifer section a draft of 28 Herefords account Rockhouse sold in three lines. The tops of 12 weighed 330kg and made $880, or 266c/kg. The seconds weighed 28kg and sold in a pen of five for $760, or 266c/kg. A pen of 11 unweighed heifers fro the same vendor sold for $560.
P & H Lambert sold Murray Grey heifers, seven months, for $730 for 16 and eight steers for $720.
Mr Robson said the calves were "fresh but light".
R Cudliff offered and sold 14 Angus cows and calves in two pens for $1850 with one pen going to Ballarat and the second pen to a Kyneton account.
N Walker sold five mixed age Angus cows with June-drop calves at foot, for $1600.
Four Angus heifers with July calves at foot made $1520.
