A yarding of around 700 store cattle met critical attention from buyers at the Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange at Sale last Friday.
It was a mixed quality yarding with few heavy steers penned as well as a limited penning of heifers.
Ben Greenwood, Greenwood Landmark, said buyers were "very selective" about their bidding, focusing on those pens that met their strict criteria.
Mr Greenwood said one feedlot operated, Garrison, with competition from South Gippsland and western Victoria.
A draft of Angus steers, 8-11 months, Pinora blood, sold by Chesterfield Pty Ltd, Glenmaggie.
The heavier pen of 15 weighing 318 kilograms, sold for $960 a head or 301 cents a kilogram.
The lighter steers from the same vendor weighed 266kg and sold for $820 or 308c/kg.
They also sold 32 steers, unweighed, for between $625-$695.
AC & RA Bowman forwarded a draft of Angus steers with a pen of 20 that weighed 224kg and sold for $710 or 316c/kg
A pen of 15 steers from the same vendor, unweighed, made $650.
B & D Lannigan, Boisdale, sold 15 Angus steers, 9-11 months, Sparta blood, 311kg, for $890 or 286c/kg.
C & J Pennycuick, Munro, forwarded Angus steers, 14 months, Te Mania blood, 344kg, which sold for $990 or 262c/kg.
A & J Scicluna sold 14 Angus steers, 287kg, for $790 or 275c/kg, while G & M Smith offered 14 steers, unweighed, that made $700.
AGM & EJ Black, Myrtlebank, sold 12 Hereford steers, 8-9 months, Mawarra blood, in two pens with 12 making $830 and seven selling for $750.
Twenty steers sold by P & S Ashdown, Tanjil, sold unweighed for $710, while Casey and Wicke, Kurrajong, sold 11 Angus steers for $700.
Of the Euros, I & R Ripper, Briagolong, sold 16 Charolais and two Charolais-cross steers for $510 and $620 respectively.
The same vendor also sold Black Baldy and Hereford steers, unweighed, for $635.
Of the heifers, Farrugia & Blayney, Myrtlebank, presented a pen of 11 Charolais heifers that sold for $560 and 18 Herefords for $550.
