Bairnsdale agents yarded around 1200 cattle on Friday with feedlotters and a small pool of local buyers lending support.
When compared with the centre's sale a fortnight earlier, the quality was improved and condition of the stock presented "quite good".
Bill Wyndham and Co's Colin Jones said a larger percentage of the yarding was made up of European-cross cattle and these sold to strong feedlotter demand.
Cattle came forward from Delegate, NSW, Orbost, Dargo and local areas.
Mr Jones said cattle in the 280 to 340 kilogram range were in demand as buyers realised numbers were going to be short later on.
Meat and Livestock Australia's National Livestock Reporting Service said the average weaner steer price was $625/head or 287c/kg. The average weaner heifer price was $468/head or 226c/kg.
M & A Kimber, Cann River, sold 17 Limousin-cross steers, nine to ten months old, weighing 326kg, and in forward to prime condition, for $1000.
Wingan Pastoral, Wingan River, sold mixed sex Charolais cattle with the steer portion weighing 315kg selling for $920 or 292c/kg.
The heifer portion from the same vendor, same breeding and 10-11 months old, weighed 316kg and sold for $730 or 231c/kg.
Wingan also sold a pen of Speckle Park-cross heifers, weighing 345kg, that sold for $725.
O Herman sold steers weighing 321kg to $900 or 280c/kg.
Angus steers, nine to 10 months old, sold account Rosynski, weighed in at 270kg and sold for $870 or 322c/kg.
Delegate River breeders, LH & JL Reed, sold Angus steers weighing 277kg for $835 or 301c/kg.
Another interstate vendor, Dean and Anne Campbell, Finchley Pastoral, Delegate, forwarded a draft that included Hereford steers, weighing 285kg and making $670.
Other lots quoted included steers account D & M Knott, Dargo, weighing 230kg and selling for $570.
Saler/Hereford-cross steers, 12 to 14 months, sold account Risely, Lindenow, sold to $900 for the tops weighing 322kg, or 279c/kg, and $790 for the lighter pen weighing 292kg coming out at 270c/kg.
Of the other heifers Kent Park, M9ount Taylor, sold rising two year old heifers, pregnancy tested not in calf, weighing 364kg for $645. The sisters weighing 343kg sold for $560.
Webb & Richardson, Orbost, forwarded heifers, 300kg that sold for $670.
Two lines of Angus heifers sold account Marlo Downs, Marlo, went for a top of $895 or 269c/kg for the pen weighing 332kg. The pen of lighter heifers, 307kg, sold for $750 or 244c/kg.
The service reported cows with calves at foot sold from $690 to $1400 to average $1138/outfit.
