EWE LAMBS: Vendor Allen Sheridan, Loy Yang, Gippsland, was on hand to see these July-August 2018 drop first cross ewe lambs sell to a top of $170 at Ballarat on Tuesday.
A consignment of Border Leicester/Merino ewe lambs from Allen and Andrew Sheridan trading as AF Sheridan and Partners, Loy Lang, Gippsland, sold to $170 at Ballarat Tuesday.
The Sheridans offered 1833 July/August drop lambs, February shorn, which averaged $150.
Andrew Sheridan said the ewe lambs were offered at this time because of the extremely dry conditions in Gippsland as well as a change in enterprise mix.
He said the lambs had been grazing a forage brassica crop, however the dry season meant the crop had failed and the sheep had to go.
"I am happy with the prices and the way the sheep presented," he said.
The lambs were sired by Pastora Superborder and Morton Border Leicester rams and were out of medium framed Hazeldean blood ewes.
Mr Sheridan said the wool value of these sheep was good. The mature aged first cross ewes microned at 26 to 27 micron and were cutting nearly $40 of wool.
The Sheridans have also changed their enterprise mix to concentrate on wool growing with a self-replacing Merino flock.
Landmark East Gippsland's Brad Obst, said the major buyer of the Sheridan's lambs was the Currie family, Casterton.
Lambs were also bought to return to Gippsland.
