Agriculture Victoria is running another series of workshops, to help northern Victorian primary producers to make tactical decisions around dry seasonal conditions.
Speakers at the four Plan2Farm workshops, to be held at Kerang, Yarrawalla, Stanhope and Congupna, include Jumbuk Consulting’s Colin Peace, agronomist Damian Jones, Goulburn-Murray Water river operations manager Andrew Shields and Agriculture Victoria agronomists Dale Grey and Dale Boyd.
Agriculture Victorian senior irrigation officer Rob O’Connor said the speakers would give presentations on cropping gross margins, valuing water for autumn irrigations and trading and the outlook for climate, water, fodder and grain, for the next six months.
“Whether you are cropping or managing a dairy, beef or sheep enterprise; the high prices for water, grain and fodder make upcoming decisions about irrigation and cropping options very important,” Mr O’Connor said.
He said the workshops would be of value for farmers considering what they should do, in terms of starting irrigation or buying or selling water.
“They can get a bit more clarity around where things are heading, in terms of climate, when the autumn break might arrive, or what’s in store for future months,” Mr O’Connor said.
“They’ll also hear what the hay situation is, the outlook for summer crop production, particularly in the north, and national influences, in regards to grain prices.
“Some of those things will have a bearing on what farmers plan to do.”
The workshops will be held in Kerang and Yarrawalla, on Thursday, February 21 and Stanhope and Congupna on Friday, February 22.
