Phil and Kerrie Geehman were very happy customers after the sale of their steers at Bairnsdale.
While it is very dry at Ensay, buying hay has been the savior for many of the district’s producers.
Mr Geehman said water was now their biggest issue, with creeks and dams drying up.
In past years, the Geehmans have always sold their Hereford calves at Ensay in March, at Elders’ annual mountain calf sale.
Being able to keep their steers in good condition paid off at Bairnsdale, where repeat buyers fought over their top pen of steers.

Weighing in at 343 kilograms liveweight, the Geehman’s top pen of steers sold for $1280 a head, which equated to 373 cents a kilgoram, in a unprecedented sale for Bairnsdale, and for any other sale of late.
This diversification of selling options is proving to be very beneficial for East Gippsland farmers.
Mr Geehman said they will be considering all selling options in the future.
They are hoping to receive rain soon, and then a favourable autumn.
