Beef Week heads west to wrap up event
KURRA-WIRRA: Siblings, Simon, Anna-Grace and Michael Close, Kurra-Wirra Red Angus and Senepol, Culla, had a display that included a selection of the stud's 2017 drop bulls for sale. The stud has sent bulls for sale at the Barcaldine Topstock sale in Queensland.

WEERAN: The Weeran Team, Alec and Jo Moore, Stud Principals, with Tom French, Stud Co-Principal, Leah Drendal and Bryce McDonald. “We have some exciting bulls on the horizon” said Alec Moore. “There is a lot of interest the science of breeding cattle and we are beefing up our embryo program here at Weeran”. Adding, “the stud has an enthusiastic young team working with us, and they are keen to be involved. It’s exciting times for this industry.”

MOORA: Stud Co-principal Linton Price with a two of the bulls available for sale at the stud open day. “We sold four bulls today and are happy with the prices achieved” said Linton. “Our bulls are well priced and value for money. We look for growth, milk and carcase and keeping a good balance across the figures”.

PATHFINDER: Stud Principals Nick and Sara Moyle with long term clients, Harry and Tim Kelly, Caramut. "Pathfinder’s focus is on calving ease cattle with growth and fat cover which provides the ‘doing’ ability of the herd”. said Nick Moyle. “There is growing demand for grass finished cattle and the fat cover has become increasingly important. I'm looking forward to a very positive cattle market when the drought breaks”.
PATHFINDER: Elle Moyle with Brett Linke, Mt Napier. Mr Linke, a regular client for 15 years recently topped the heifers at the 2019 Hamilton Weaner Sales.

BRA - MA: Debra & Bray Milstead from Bra - Ma had Hereford bulls on display today at the field day. They were rising 2 year old. Bulls featured included Curracabark Equator and Kaludah Viking bloodlines. Bra Ma was established in 1979
BANEMORE: David Jenkin - owner of Banemore had 39 bulls on display today, all of which incorporate performance focused genetics. Within his selection of bulls there is a large emphasis on IMF data. Accredited with Breedplan 5 star Completeness, the Jenkin family pride themselves in producing Poll Herefords that a functional, easy calving and have high carcase and growth yield.
CASHMORE PARK: Leo Cummins from Cavendish and John Keiller from Cashmore Park both cooperate with the cattle oprtation involving Twinner Cattle. The Twinner cattle are a composite base breed. They believe they are more profitable as they are able to turn out twice as many calves.
SHADY PARK: Owner of Shady Park - Rebecca Rundell had a display of bulls and females available for viewing. An influence of New Zealand sires were selected to be incorporated within the breeding program after Rebecca was a recipient of the prestigious Trans Tasman Exchange Scholarship from the Angus Society in 2002. AI sires include Rennylea, Ayrvale,and Connealy genetics. Other genetics within the herd include local Banquet Angus bloodliines.

LANARK: Kate Fairlie, who owns Lanark Angus with her family. Kate was a recent NAB Agribuisness Rising Champion SA Finalist, previously Kate had also won the Angus Australia National Judging Competition, which allowed her to travel to Illinois. She has also been a previous Angus Youth Ambassador, and is the Southern Regional Manager of Beach Port Liquid Minerals. At Lanark they calve in Autumn. Embryo programs are important at Lanark, and genetics include embryos from Miller Wilson Angus in Alberta.
LANARK: Junior heifers at Lanark with bloodlines including progeny from Canadian Angus Bull Young Dale Believe 46B. The Fairlie Family also have up and coming young bulls sired by him also.
MORGIANA: Allan Crozier and Jenny Walsh displayed their 18-24 month old Charolais sale bulls. Morgiana run a mixture of polled and horned genetics. Established in 1971, AI has a large place wjthin their operation/ They aim to produce functional cattle, with calving ease and fast growth, along with good milk traits. The season for Morgiana involved a harsh autumn, but the good spring was benefit for them.

BASSANO: Jane & Ron Stewar, Bassano Angus, had their 20th Angus Bull sale on Day 9 of Beef Week. Their breeding objectives are focused on sound, fertile cattle with excellent temperament for herds in Southern Australia. Spring calving allows for offspring to be sold to backgrounders.
MT GAMBIER: Jason Malseed - Mt Gambier Limousins runs about 100 Limousin cows, mostly stud cattle. His operation involves mostly black genetics, and his herd began with a strong base Kensal Limousin Stud. Jason has been breeding Limousins for about 15 years.
NOORLA: Neil Shepard, owns the only Beef Shorthorn stud in SA. Noorla was founded in 1970 and is situated at Kongorong. Neil runs 40 stud cows, and about 120 commericals. He cross breeds with Wagyu, for premiums as well as calving ease. He is a supplier to JBS Swift. AI is involved within his breeding program.
TUGULAWA: Gary Allen, Tugulawa Simmentals, display included cattle for their sale. Gary has been breeding Simmental cattle for over 30 years. Mostly traditional Simmentals are used within the herd, however there is a few black Simmentals within the herd. Gary mainly uses AI within his herd. Gary has utilised MSS Maximus - a Canadian bull. He is soon to have some of the first calves in Australia sired by this bull. He also uses TNT Tanker, which is an American Sire.

RELLUM FARMS: Grantley Muller pictured with Nicole & Chris Muller from Rellum Farms. Pictured with Rellum Farms Navigator N3, 2 year old and he was sold today. Grantley said their was a steady flow of people throughout the day. They run a mostly traditional herd, and their business involves AI and ET programs.
EBENEZER PARK: Mother & Daughter, Sarah & Stephanie (age 9) Bolte own and operate Ebenezer Park South Devons. They have had a stud since 2015, and their secon year involved with Beef Week. Their calving season is in Autumn, and they run about 100 breeders. The ability to produce high yielding vealers and feeder steers are an advantage for their stud.
CALADENIA: Michael Black from Caladenia Limousins, established two years ago. He incorporates genetics from Frog Hollow & Wulfs Limousins, along with other AI sires. He runs 28 breeders, and previously purchased stock from Nelshaby. Michael successfully sold bulls on the day. He has both apricot and black genetics.
CHARTON: Partners Graham Sims and Marg Williams from Mt Gambier - owners of Charlon. They both run a small herd, as they are both partly retired. They have about a dozen stud cows, and they have been attending this field day every day for the past 10 years with their own cattle. They aim to produce feed efficient, moderate birth weight cattle.

GLENFERN: Brother and sister James & Catherine Humphries from Glenfern Herefords had grass fed bulls aged from 15 - 18 months for sale. They focus their cattle around good temperament, and good yeilding ability. Gentics used within their herd include Kidman Blue Chip. Hamilton and Mt Gambier Store Sales are where their 18 month old steers get sold. At Glenfern their breeding program involves AI, 2 year old joining and with autumn and spring calving.
GLENFERN: Glenfern Herefords had grass fed bulls aged from 15 - 18 months for sale.
CARA PARK: The stud is owned by the Curtis Family. Pictured are parents Roz and Ainsley (right) with children Rachel and Cameron. They breed purebred Salers, with varying bloodlines from Australia, Canada, and America. They run about 30-40 head of cattle, and they calve in March. Often their bulls sold go into crossbreeding herds due to the yielding ability of the Salers breed.
After a big nine days, Stock & Land Beef Week has come to an end.
Studs in South-West Victoria and South-East South Australia closed the event, opening their gates on the final day.
And it was the biggest day of the nine, with 30 studs opening their gates, including a group at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds.
Some of the studs that participated included Kurra-Wirra, Milroy, Melville Park, Wilkah, Glenfern, Boonaroo, Murdeduke, Pathfinder, Weeran, Lindsay, Banemore, Chalon, Cara Park, Rellum Farms and Noorla.
