In 1992, the Stud Beef Victoria Committee made a decision to conduct the first Beef Week in Victoria and the Riverina. Given the scope of this new venture it was a bold decision indeed.
Stock & Land was immediately accepted its invitation as major naming sponsor, which was the start of an ongoing relationship which has assured the continuing success of this event. Such a long lasting arrangement is unusual in the commercial world and demonstrates Stock & Land’s commitment to the seedstock and commercial beef industries.
The 1992 Beef Week had just 50 participating studs and ran over five days. It became apparent to seedstock producers, Beef Week would become a major promotional activity, and before long the event had expanded to nine days with close to 200 participating studs opening their gates.
This year marks the 28th Stock & Land Beef Week, which will highlight the quality of south-east Australia’s seed stock which enhances the overall quality of the Australian beef herd.
It has been claimed that some of the world’s best genetics in the British and European breeds exist in south-east Australia. Cattle carrying these world class genetics will be on display during Beef Week 2019.
Beef Week numbers are down slightly this year, due to the disastrous season in some areas and challenging conditions in other districts.
Cattle prices overall have withstood the seasonal problems with areas that have received decent rains providing support at sales. The market is expected to improve considerably in the autumn.
Support of sponsors is critical for the ongoing success. Boehringer Ingelheim has continued as an important contributor, as well as valuable sponsor The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, Rural Bank, Riverlea Stockfeeds, and this year we welcome the new sponsor, Shearwell Australia which specialises in animal identification and management systems. Thanks must go to the participating studs, Beef Week committee led by chairman John Adams and director Geoff Phillips.
Take the opportunity to view some of the best beef cattle in the nation.
