Neil Page said that the long drought has affected the condition of his cattle, despite supplementary feeding them plenty of hay.
Neil and Corrie’s Angus steers and heifers were in poor condition, and would weigh very light, if they had been put over the scales.
However, some times it can be advantage not to weight them.
Neil was very happy with his prices, which saw 41 steers sell from $970 to $1000. Estimated to weigh 250 to 300 kilograms liveweight, this saw them equal 333 to 388c/kg.
Neil Page said his cattle would normally weigh up to 100kgs more, so he was very pleased with the competition.
Most of the competition came from South Gippsland, and luckily, producers like these very plain cattle, as they will put on a lot of weight given the amount of grass in South and West Gippsland.
Neil may have to take Corrie for a few dinners out, as his heifers sold very well too. Neil sold two drafts of heifers, 37 in total, and both pens sold for $780, which was also excellent for their quality.
