Graham Hastings has been rearing vealers for a long time.
Mr Hastings’ vealers, which were European-cross, are well-known by local processors, always attracting solid bidding, and this trend continued at Pakenham’s fat cattle sale on Monday.
His vealers weighed between 415 and 450 kilograms liveweight, and with strong demand for prime vealers with a carcase weight over 220kg, the vealers, which were mostly steers, sold for 306.2 cents a kilogram.
His only heifers made 290.2c/kg.
Mr Hastings is very proud of his calves, and paint brands them with a big capital H, before they leave his property.
Farming at Glen Forbes in the Bass Coast Shire, which is near Western Port Bay, he has big-frame crossbred cows to calve to Charolais and Limousin bulls.
Mr Hastings said these calves were only 10 months-old, and having had a great season for all of 2018, they weighed very well.
Greg Harrison, Cardinia Meats, purchased the steers, as he prefers the Charolais calves, especially high yielding heavy weights.
Mr Hastings pressed the point that good quality, prime, heavy vealers still sell very well.
His sales proved there was still money to be made in vealers.
However, in a season such as seen in most areas of the country in 2018, not many can produce such good quality calves as him.
