Gavin Missen runs sheep and cattle on their Woodside property, near Yarram. Woodside is an area that has missed rain from the west, and the east, and is in dire drought conditions.
Gavin said it was time to make a decision and our cows and calves had to go to make way for the sheep.
At Leongatha, last Thursday, BM&GH Missen sold 42 Angus cows, which had their 1st to 5th Angus calves at foot.
Gavin said they have had two failed springs now, and with just 282mm of rain for 2018, and two purchased loads of hay, it was time to lighten off.
Having said this, Gavin did say they have had 35mm in the last three days.
However, the cows were in plain condition, but still looking after heir young calves.
Competition was very strong for all cows and calves, and selling from $1040 to $1360 was at least $150-$200 more than Gavin expected.
