A strong field of buyers and a good quality yarding of cattle led to strong inquiry and higher prices at the Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange at Sale last Friday.
Associated Agents yarded 1455 cattle.
Landmark Greenwood’s Ben Greenwood, said there were some good runs of heavier cattle that sold at “slightly better rates” than the previous month’s sale.
“The smaller, lighter cattle sold very well – the heifers in particular showed a lot of improvement,” Mr Greenwood said.

Graeme McGillivray, Rodwells, Sale, said the yarding comprised good quality, well bred cattle.
He said the fatteners “enjoyed” the opportunity to buy aged cattle.
The heifer portion of the yarding also received strong demand from feedlotters.
Buyers traveled from South East of South Australia, while local support was from bullock fatteners from South Gippsland and Warragul.
Of the heavy steers there was a draft that came forward from P & L McClen, Stratford, who sold 12 Murray Grey steers, two years, weighing 50 kilograms, for $1290, or 288c/kg. Buyer was Landmark Leongatha.
The same vendor sold 11 Angus steers, two years, 410kg, for $1235 or 301c/kg.
VM & E White sold 60 steers, 18-20 months old, from $1325 to a top of $1520 to average $1420.
G Langley, Glengarry, sold a pen of 17 Angus steers, 370kg, for $1025 or 277c/kg.
Six Angus steers from JG & GM Byers, Boisdale, sold for $1160, or 295c/kg to Landmark Leongatha.
Kevin Garrett, Annsfield, Rosedale, forwarded an annual draft of Angus and Angus/Charolais cross steers and heifers, Kunuma and Battersby blood.
The heaviest of the Angus steers, 455kg, sold for $1290, or 283c/kg to Elders Leongatha.
Others in the draft included 15 weighing 436kg selling for $1360 or 311c/kg, 15 at $1360 or 313c/kg and 18 at $1200 all to Landmark Leongatha. A pen of 20 sold for $1230, or 302c/kg, while the lightest pen at 374 comprising 21 steers sold for $1080 or 288c/kg.
Annsfied also sold five Black Baldy and Charolais steers weighing 361kg, for $1020, or 282c/kg.
BJ & LE Neumann, Perry Bridge, sold 20 Angus steers, 13-14 months, Pinora and Innersdae blood, for $1120 or 314c//kg.
Pinora Farms, Heyfield, forwarded a pen of 15 Angus steers, 378kg, 14-15 months, that sold for 310c/kg or $970 a head.
RAJ Crooke, Holey Plains, sold 20 Black Baldy steers, 350kg, for $980 or 280c/kg to Landmark Leongatha.
A line of steers and heifer weaners in store condition was forwarded by WB & MN Hawkins.
The steer portion sold from $650 to $855 while the heifers made from $525 to $590. The whole consignment averaged $748.
D & KM McMillan sent forward 34 Charolais steers, 8-9 months old, that sold to $790 and averaged $745.
The same vendor sold 29 heifers, same breeding and age to $900 for an average of $755.
B & A Ross, Stockdale, sold a total of 29 Angus steers in three lines.
The tops sold for $820 to Rodwells Leongatha while the draft averaged $731.
A line of 19 Angus steers from G Sas, Glengarry, sold to $970 or 288c/kg for the pen weighing an average of 364kg.
The same vendor also sold seven lighter steers weighing 322kg for $825 or 256c/kg to SEJ, Korumburra.
The heifer portion of the Sas offering sold to for $790.
Bairnsdale-based Norling Rural forwarded Angus steers that sold to $615 with the seconds making $560.
The same vendor offered Angus heifers that sold to a top of $645 for 13 while the seconds were knocked down at $605. A third line of 16 heifers sold for $510
A draft of mixed sex Angus and calves, five to six months, Pinora and Leawood blood, was offered account GJ & LA Dunsmuir, Briagalong.
The first three pens went to Landmark Traralgon. The first pen of 14 made $570 as did the second pen of 19, while the same buyer paid $495 for a pen of 20.
A pen of lighter heifers sold account Dunsmuir sold for $440 to Elders Pakenham and the final pen of 26 went for $410.
CT Ferguson, Longford, sold 60 Angus heifers which went for $710 to $835 to average $795.
P & S Ashdown, Tanjil, sold 13 Angus heifers that made to $640, while a second pen of 13 went for $520.
There was only a small yarding of cows and calves to come forward.
Top price was $1360 for two Hereford cows with calves at foot as well as six Angus cows and calves for $960. The Estate of Birss sold eight Angus cows and calves for $1160.
