For nearly 90 years, Philmac has enjoyed a rich history.

The man behind the name was talented engineer Malcolm ‘Mac’ Phillipps.

Mac was not afraid to take risks or of working hard to achieve his goals.

He was guided by a simple philosophy – there is always a better way to do things.

A fitter and turner by trade, Mac was already manufacturing plumbing fittings.

This led to the first of many innovations and the first global Philmac product – the first press-button toilet cistern.

After many years and improvements, a new model with its major parts made of plastic mouldings became a glimpse of the future.

Other world firsts soon followed, including a revolutionary new ball-cam float valve in 1947 and Philmac’s ratio pressure reducing valves in 1966.

Then 1968 saw Philmac become the first company in the world to make compression fittings entirely from plastic.

Overseas contracts soon followed in the United Kingdom, North America, Japan, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and even the demanding environment of North Sea oil rigs.

Since those early days, Philmac has developed a worldwide reputation for innovative manufacturing built on decades of experience and investment in cutting-edge manufacturing technology, according to a company spokesman.

“Philmac products are manufactured in the state-of-the-art plant in Adelaide,” he said.

“This award-winning facility features some of the most advanced injection moulding and robotic assembly equipment available.

“Combine this with a workforce that is dedicated to ensuring quality and reliability and you have a product that will last for generations.”

The Adelaide plant is also the home to the Philmac Research and Development and Testing facilities.

“The Philmac team of experienced engineers holds many patented world-leading products and receives regular award recognition,” the spokesman said.

“Today, there are an astonishing 50 million of Philmac fittings in use across the country.

“While around 50 percent of all Philmac products are exported to more than 40 countries around the world.

“They are used for applications ranging from plumbing and gas, to municipal systems, livestock water control, irrigation, industry and mining.

“If Malcolm 'Mac’ Phillipps could see Philmac today, we know he would be very proud of his company.

“A company which is still built on innovation and dedication.”
