Buyers from around the country attended the recent annual Cashmore Oaklea ram sale in Hamilton, travelling as far as from NSW, South Australia, Tasmania and East Gippsland.
A large offering of 414 rams attracted many new and repeat buyers, with 13 volume purchasers adding 10 or more rams to their respective flocks.
Leading the charge was Roderic O’Conner, Cressy, Tas, who purchased 15 new composite rams, paying a top of $3000 and an average of $1867.
Topping the auction was Lot 97, an Elite Performance composite ram, purchased by Georgina Gubbins, Hayward for $5500.
Stud co-principal John Keiller said this ram was well-balanced across a number of traits, “had a good phenotype, and displayed solid early growth numbers with a very good carcase”.
Cashmore Oaklea co-vendor Don Pegler said they were very pleased with the result, which was “a reflection of the high performance of the Cashmore Oaklea sheep”.
Mr Pegler said buyers were able to purchase rams in the top 5 per cent of industry standards.
