The breeding goals of Boorana are to breed a sheep with a highly productive skin and a quality, free-growing wool.
Stud principal William Lynch said Boorana sheep are also highly fertile animals and do not require mulesing, while one of the goals of the stud is to have positive figures for the meat traits of muscle and fat.
To achieve these goals, the Woorndoo-based breeder has continued to purchase some of the best genetics on offer. In 2015, they added sires Leahcim 699 for $17,000 for his productive meat traits and Glenlea Park 350 for $12,000 for his excellent pedigree and overall productivity.
In 2016, they bought Glenlea Park 32 for $7000, chosen for his superior wool quality and length.
“Last but certainly not least, we purchased in partnership with Peter and Marianne Wallis of Glenlea Park, Moorundie NE 73 for $30,000 for his dense high quality productive wool on an excellent frame. His first progeny will be available in this sale,” Mr Lynch said.
The 15-month-old son of NE20 topped the strong Hamilton Sheepvention ram sale in August 2016. Its 19.9-micron, long stapled, bold crimping wool had a standard deviation of 3.3, coefficient of variation of 16.6 and 99.5 per cent comfort factor.
Last year, Glenlea Park 129, a double couple poll ram was added to the Boorana stud sire line-up. Mr Lynch said the ram, which was purchased for $15,000, featured an excellent frame with outstanding wool. A further three Glenlea Park sires have been bought in 2018.
“The sheep at Boorana are all run under commercial conditions and have been non mulesed since 2010,” he said.
With a focus on producing a dual purpose, highly fertile, easy-care animal with excellent growth rates, Dale Bruns joined the Boorana team this year to assist with classing and stud advice.
Boorana will conduct its annual ram sale on Wednesday, October 24 with the inspection starting at 11am and a helmsman auction at 1.30pm. On offer will be 72 quality rams featuring Glenlea Park, Moorundie, Leahcim and Boorana bloodlines of which about 90pc are Poll Merinos. Please note the change of location to 902 Back Bushy Creek Road, Glenthompson.
