Junior cattle handlers at this year’s Royal Melbourne Show have been given some simple advice by judge Cindy Coad - ensure your boots are clean.
Ms Coad said she was very impressed by the standard of the young handlers, from Victorian and NSW high schools and colleges.
“Boots are very important,” Ms Coad said.
“You are coming out here to present everything to your best, so it doesn’t take very long to clean your boots.”
She said he had judged at a number of shows but felt the standard at the Royal Melbourne was amazing.
“From the under-12’s it was an amazing standard, it really surprises me as to how good they were,” Ms Coad said.
She praised the teachers who had worked with their students on their presentation skills.
“They have got so much of a passion for it and commitment, whoever has been teaching them has been teaching them everything they need to know and it's been fantastic to see.”
She said young handlers needed to have confidence, to convey to the judge their animal was the best.
“They have to be aware of everything that’s going on in the ring and be able to stand the animal up, as it’s meant to stand up,” she said.
Victorian Deputy Opposition leader, the National’s Peter Walsh, also praised the teachers.
“I’d really like to congratulate the teachers, who get involved in this and spend the effort to help the students develop up the steers and heifers,” Mr Walsh said.
“You are doing something that’s really great.”
