The wool on the backs of the champion black and coloured sheep was commended by the judge as being exceptional for spinning.
Jodie Cheyne’s Lynview stud, Glenburn, took out the supreme exhibit of the breed, at the Royal Melbourne Show, with her champion ram.
And it wasn’t the first time the three year-old ram has had success, having taken home multiple supreme ribbons since being shown as a lamb.
Ms Cheyne said the ram stood out from a young age, and after 25 years of breeding, was the epitome of what she was striving to breed.
“He’s a medium wool, whose fleece is ideal for spinning, he’s got the quality and quantity, but is also a big sheep; he’s the complete package,” Ms Cheyne said.
She said she had specifically chosen ewes to join the ram with for the first time, next year.
Judge Helen Wright, Kan-B Colours, Glenlofty, said the ram’s wool was incredibly soft, and would be a dream to spin.
Ms Wright said the fleece on the champion ewe, also by Lynview, was beautiful.
