Showing his Cheviot sheep is an opportunity for Spion Kop’s Roger Wilkinson to draw attention to the lesser-known breed.
A breed that was once popular in the 1950s and ‘60s, has over the years become less known.
But Mr Wilkinson, from Wangoom, whose family started breeding Cheviots in 1948, said they are very hardy sheep that can handle most conditions.
“I plan to show every year because the show needs to see all breeds,” Mr Wilkinson said.
Exhibiting the only three Cheviot sheep in the catalogue, the stud took all the major ribbons.
His ewe took out supreme Cheviot sheep, and he described her as being not a big ewe, but a stylish, fine wool sheep.
He said she was a representation of the future of the breed.
“We’re trying to make the wool finer as that’s where the demand is,” he said.
