Usually signaled as the need for meat pies at the AFL Grand Final, more cattle have been slaughtered in Victoria in the past week.
September is the month when cattle slaughter increases, but it was due to increased slaughter of male cattle in all states of the Eastern Seaboard.
While Tasmanian cattle slaughter is small compared to the three most eastern states, its figure jumped by 115 per cent compared to the previous week.
In all, cattle slaughter was 142,901 head, a 2pc rise week-on-week, and 8pc compared to last year.
Interestingly, Tasmanian slaughters nearly as many calves (4335) as all other cattle combined.
While the slaughter of female cattle, 17,522 head, was back 1pc in NSW, it was still more than half of the state’s total number.
Lamb slaughter was up by 9pc to 280,620, but down 27pc year-on-year, while sheep slaughter was back 5pc, but up 47pc compered to this time last year.
