Buyers were scarce and bidding was slow during the annual production of TA Field Estates, Wyvern Station sale on Auctions Plus on Tuesday.
Offering some 5310 unshorn wether lambs and 3470 Merino ewes, only two of the catalogued 17 sale lots collected more than one each with all but two wether lines failing to reach the vendors reserve.
Of the 15 lots passed a total of seven attracted no interest at all through the 50-plus minute auction. And of the two wethers line sold a draft of 700 weighed averaging 29.9kg secured a price of $92 while a lot of 400, also 29.9kg made $94.
Elders’ Hay representative Peter Head said he was confused by the result following more than 2400 pre-sale viewing of the catalogue and 125 log-on viewers.
Mr Head said that in previous years buyers have used the Wyvern production sale as a precursor to the Hay September sale.
“Perhaps this year they have become wary of the season but those who obvious want sheep realize that opportunities like this rarely present themselves twice. Hence as soon as the auction the phone started to ring” he said.
And at a point in time, one hour after the sale, the tops of the 13-drop ewes, 56.9kg were negotiated for sale at $123 with additional party eager to secure the remaining balance of 1720 of five year-old ewes, assessed at 49.9kg and reserved at $114.
A further lot of 450 wether lambs, 23.2kg were also negotiated as a sale at the vendor’s of $73 which is rate above $3/kg live which is similar to other district wether sales Mr Head said.
