A slightly reduced yarding of 1660 head at Leongatha saw the percentage of heifers reduce after recent cheaper prices.
Agents offered a mixed quality yarding of 1200 steers, 330 heifers, and 130 cows and calves.
Noted in the offering was a reasonable supply of cattle from East Gippsland, the Monaro and the east coast of New South Wales.
It was a very mixed yarding consisting of some very well bred older and weaner steers, and the usual runs of crossbred and dairy types.
Elders Korumburra agent, Michael Foote, said with the spring growth now well and truly starting in the South Gippsland area, competition from local producers along with the regular feedlot operators was strong for the very best cattle .
The best of the grown steers made to a top of $1550 or 294 cents per kilogram liveweight with most from $1200 to $1420 or 285c to 319c/kg.
T&K Box, Leongatha South, sold 37 Angus steers, 20 months, from $1350 to $1540, and S&R Castello, Mirboo North, offered 24 Angus-Simmental steers that made $1190 to $1290.
Well bred weaner steers made from $800 to $1000 equaling 300c to 325c/kg. The lighter end of unweighed steers made from $600 to $800.
G Foat, Woodside, sold 34 Angus steers, 10 months, from $810 to $930, which equaled 325c and 322c/kg respectively. These were stronger sales than two weeks ago.
Crossbred and Friesian steers continue to be harder to sell with rates from 160c to 220c/kg being achieved for a range of weights and ages. However, a few pens of better bred crossbred steers sold at dearer rates.
Less heifers came forward than the previous sales at met similar demand.
Good quality heifers sold very well. JJF Holdings sold 19 Angus heifers, 16 months, 405kgs, for $1130. The well bred Angus heifers of D&K Kuch sold to strong competition. Their 17 Angus heofers, 343kgs, sold for $1000.
With East Gippsland falling further into drought, C&J Copper, Wulgulmerang, sold 22 Hereford cows and calves for $1100. These cows were 6 years old with early spring drop calves at foot.
Coming all the way from Bemboka in NSW, D&K McPaul sold Angus cows and calves for $1300 and $1500.
