A junior ram from Derby Downs, Marong, has taken out the Supreme Poll Dorset ribbon at Sheepvention, with judge Geoff Davey, Kerang, saying the animal was bright, alert and had plenty of muscling.
The ram first took out Champion Junior Ram, before going on to win Grand Champion Ram and then top the class.
Mr Davey said he had no trouble finding the type of ram he was looking for.
He said the June 2017 Derby Downs ram, weighing 129 kilograms, with a fat depth of 10.5 millimetres and muscle of 51mm, was a stand out.
“It didn’t matter what angle you looked at him from, he was correct on his feet, in his stance and his muscling was terrific,” Mr Davey said.
“He stood out in his class, kept going from there and finished up with the Supreme ribbon.”
Mr Davey said the junior ram was slightly lighter than the senior animal.
“His muscling was exactly the same as the older ram, so that’s what made me decide to go for the junior.”
The Senior Champion ram, also from Derby Downs, won the prestigious Ian Bucknall Trophy at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show, Bendigo, last month.
Derby Down’s Paul Brown said choosing the younger ram would not have been an easy decision.
“He has muscling all over, he’s a very compact sheep and full of meat.
“That’s the type of animal we are trying to breed.”
The Champion ewe was from Mallee Park, Hopetoun.
Mr Davey said the ewe was also a stand out, in her class.
