Hailing from South Gippsland in country Victoria, rising netball star and Wesley College year 12 boarding student Taylah Brown is on track to shoot some serious goals.
Taylah, who was recently selected for the national netball 17-and-under squad, joined Wesley College’s boarding community in the college’s Learning in Residence program after receiving a General Excellence Scholarship.
“Being part of Glen Waverley’s Learning in Residence program has been a once-in-a-life-time experience,” Taylah said.
For Taylah, balancing netball with her studies is easy, with her new accommodation a short walk from Wesley College’s state-of-the-art sporting facilities, and private transportation to and from training and games arranged by the college.
“It has made it much easier to access training, without having to spend an hour-and-a-half or more in the car, which frees up my time so I can focus on my year 12 studies.”
The new Learning in Residence facility, designed by Cox Architecture, features open and modern facilities.
Each boarding house has eight twin-share bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, and a communal living area where students can relax by the fire at night.
Taylah, who had never considered boarding before, was pleasantly surprised by the Learning in Residence program.
“It wasn’t what I was expecting at all – the program is really nurturing; the staff and mentors support my academic, sport and personal development in whatever way they can.
“Living away from home to focus on netball and my studies was a big step for me, but I am definitely glad that I did it.”
Upon graduating, the rising star plans to combine her interests in sports and science in pursuit of a degree in osteopathy.
“I want to continue to improve my skills – to help country kids like myself understand that it is possible to compete in sports at high levels if you have the dedication and drive.”
Wesley College’s Learning in Residence is a supportive purpose-built residence for senior school (years 10-12) students, from rural and regional Australia, metropolitan Melbourne and international locations.
Scholarships are open for 2019 entry, with boarding scholarships available.
