Prices bounced back strongly at Kyneton's June store cattle market when a much smaller 360-head penning met more intense inquiry.
While outside buying was limited to two southern NSW feedlot orders, much keener interest by local-area restockers proved more than adequate for the small number assembled.
The strong bounce back in Kyneton prices was in line with the improved demand for store cattle across the broader market.
Quoting these improved sales, heavy steers weighed at 539kg topped the market at $1590 a head while feeder weights, 360-450kg made $1090 to $1320/head, average 294c/kg.
Lighter steers 280-360kg made $820- $1090, average 304c/kg while light steer (unweighed) made $710- $910, av 314c/kg.
Kieran McGrath, McGrath Rodwells Livestock said the Kyneton area had received welcome rain during May and although the weather had turned cold local restockers were prepared to take on cattle in readiness for the anticipated spring growth.
In the opening pen, a lot of five Angus steers, 530kg, offered by Helen Irving, made $1590 a head while a yard of their lighter brothers, 462kg, made $1290.
Tivey Pastoral sold Angus yearling-off steers, 448kg, at $1320 while a second pen of Tivey Angus yearlings, 376kg, made $1140.
In the weaner section Tivey Pastoral sold 14 Angus, 293kg, at $955 while a second pen of the same, 251kg, made $800.
Other vendors to receive weaner steer prices around the $3/kg benchmark were: RG & AM Irving selling a yard of eight Angus, 301kg, at $900 while M O’Connor sold 10 Angus steers, 296kg at $920.
A pen of nine English family Angus steers, 279kg, made $910 while yard of 14 Hauke Angus steers, 247kg made $800 a head.
The heifer yarding, which saw limited numbers penned, found heavier weaners fetching $650 to $935 while light weaners made $580 to $780 a head as most realised 240-270c/kg.
Graziers again took a stronger position on heifers as most viewed these as more flexible and the better buying on the day.
