After the success of last year’s inaugural Sheep Week open day, the Hausler family have jumped at the chance to display their Janmac Poll Dorset and White Suffolk rams in this year’s event.
According to Janmac stud co-principal, Grant Hausler, the open day enables them to present their sheep to a wide range of commercial producers and stud breeders.
“We had potential clients from Keith, SA, visit for Sheep Week who liked what they saw and then bought the top-priced stud ram at our on-property sale last year,” Mr Hausler said.
Established in 1979, the Goroke-based stud has expanded under the direction of Grant, his wife Kerry, brother Bryce and his wife Hannah. They now run 450 Poll Dorset stud ewes.
The stud’s phenotypes of fast growth, muscle and structure is the result of more than 30 years of breeding with genetics sourced from Kurralea, Ulandi Park and Kentish Downs.
White Suffolks were introduced about six years ago to complement Janmac’s stud breeding operation. The Hausler family have grown their White Suffolk flock to 150 stud ewes.
Running alongside a busy mixed farming operation of 1600ha, the Hausler family plan to maintain current stud numbers.
“The role we play as ram breeders is very important and if we get it right, our clients get it right, it’s an exciting time to be part of the sheep and lamb industry.”
