The livestock supply chain is under more pressure than ever and we cannot afford to be complacent. The recent ACCC Beef Market study found shortfalls in the industry’s appetite for continuous improvement in the livestock supply chain.
National peak industry groups were apathetic about the 15 recommendations handed down by the ACCC. I fully support the 15 recommendations because I know they will improve transparency and accountability in the livestock supply chain.
The ACCC report, and the lacklustre response from industry groups, highlights the importance of strong representation for industry. Industry groups cannot afford to be dictated to. We must lead from the front on these important supply chain issues and other key issues such as animal welfare, biosecurity, rural crime and farmer health and safety.
The Victorian Farmers Federation Livestock Group is a leader in the industry. We have spearheaded initiatives to improve livestock traceability and market access, and to make life easier and more profitable for livestock producers.
I am proud to be president of a group that is at the front and centre of every policy debate that needs the voice of Victorian livestock producers, leading negotiations with industry and government bodies.
The VFF Livestock Group Policy Council is filled with proactive and dedicated livestock producers who have all played a role in the Livestock Group’s success, but every year opportunities become available for anyone brave enough to put their hand up and join the team.
This year we’re calling for candidates to stand for election in the Wimmera, Corangamite, North East and East Gippsland regions. Nominations close June 18 at 5pm.
Don’t assume someone else will do it for your industry. Stand up and have a crack.
